I love to use essential oils for pain and inflammation, I mean it's what I do after all ;) I see people all the time in my massage practice with pain, chronic pain, acute pain, muscle fatigue and let's face it that sucks. Pain totally alters your life! It changes the way you feel emotionally, it causes stress to your body because it is processing those pain signals. I love to add essential oils to these situations because they offer us support to help our bodies heal, calm themselves and begin to deal with the issue at hand.

Maybe muscle spasms are an issue for you, or you've just played basketball and mildly rolled your ankle, these are great times to grab your essential oil blend and apply it. Now time for the disclaimer, PLEASE if you need medical attention, or if you have to seriously consider whether you need medical attention, then you do, so please don't just apply Lavender oil and hope you are going to be healed got get the medical attention!

Now that said, adding essential oils that are known for their pain relieving and anti-inflammatory properties to help our bodies during time of injury or pain can be very useful. There are many research articles published that state that, we are seeing essential oils and Aromatherapy being used in major medical facilities all over the US, that's been happening in other parts of the world forever, so it goes to show they are more than just a gimmick. You can search PubMed for various studies if that stuff suits you. I am a total science nerd so it amazes me but some of you that is not your cup of tea, so I won't go into that here.

As for oils to use and when, you can see from our other posts some of our recommendations and you can search on our site for more blog posts about oils to try. Essential oils have the ability to help or assist with multiple things rather that just one specific thing. They can be antibacterial all while being pain relieving. They could be anti-inflammatory while being a decongestant, so there are many oils that do many different things you just have to try a few and see what works best for you. Here I am going to share some easy recipes with common oils to help you have a few blends on hand in case a rolled ankle or sore back come up for you or a loved one.

Inflammation buster

4 drops Balsam Copaiba, 2 drops Peppermint, add to 15 ml Carrier oil and apply to area.

Muscle Spasm Buster

4 drops Cypress,2 drops Basil, 2 drops Peppermint, add to 15 ml carrier oil or cream and apply to affected area. This dilution is great for short term acute type issues rather than long term. If you find that this blend is working well definitely use it and just add a bit more carrier oil to dilute it to a more appropriate level for more consistent use.

Joint, Tendon, and Ligament Relief

3 drops German Chamomile, 2 drops Helichyrsum, 2 drops Lavender, add to 15 ml carrier oil or cream and apply to area 3-5 times daily if pain or inflammation still present.

Massage Oil Blend

I love this blend to massage onto backs and necks that are tired, stressed and tight with spasm. 3 drops Cypress, 1 drop Peppermint, 2 drops Black Spruce blended in 1 ounce of carrier oil and massage onto area.

Make one or two of these blends up and give them a try, and be sure to come back and let me know how it goes! These are just a few of my favorites, what are yours?
